Arapahoe Basin Beach Party

Here are some photos from our spring beach party at A-Basin. It was a little cold and snowy that day but still a lot of fun! We only got a few runs in as the remaining part of the day was dedicated to some beach-side partying. Enjoy the pics.

DRM

If you ethically buy a CD from a distributer who implants that CD with DRM conditional access control which allows the CD to be played only by one device, then that device fails (say the hard-drive dies) would it then be legal to un-ethically download/torrent the CD so you can play it again? Or does the price of the original content include a price reduction to take into account a single device usage? These are questions that may be solved soon if not already for the music industry (see below) but what about the movie, cable, or IPTV industries?

The iTunes Store, run by Apple Inc., allows users to purchase a track online for $.99 US. The tracks purchased use Apple's FairPlay DRM system. Apple later launched iTunes Plus, which offered higher quality DRM-free tracks for a higher price. On October 17, 2007, iTunes Plus became available at the usual $.99 price, replacing the non-Plus tracks. On January 6, 2009 Apple announced at its Macworld Expo keynote that iTunes music would be available completely DRM free by the end of the month. Videos sold and rented through iTunes, as well as mobile software sold through the iTunes App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, continue to use Apple's FairPlay DRM to in inhibit casual piracy.

Summit County Weekend

I finished up my spring break with a weekend up at Keystone and a day of skiing at Breckenridge. Above are a few pictures from the trip. It was a beautiful spring day in Summit County with a nice week of snow storms providing some nice cold white stuff to float around on.

OS Wars

Microsoft Hits Apple Where It Hurts...

I think that computer manufactures should give you the choice of what OS you get when buying a new PC*, and I don't mean which version of Windows or Mac OS. That way people will have a price tag associated with the OS they choose, giving more insight to what they're buying. When you're shelling out ~$1000+ dollars for a new computer, as much as 20% of the cost is the price you're paying for the operating system. Just think, if you could chose a Linux distribution and get an immediate 20% discount on your next computer purchase... That would be nice.


* I use the term 'PC' to describe any personal computer regardless of the operating system running on the machine.

Snowy Week In Colorado

It was a snowy week in Colorado. This past weekend, Julia, Melissa, Jason and I got in a powder day up at A-Basin. We could only play on the lower half of the mountain though, due to 70+ mph winds at the summit. Above I have posted a picture of my co-worker and friend running around Golden Ponds in Longmont this past weekend.
